What is placenta encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been steamed, dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills. Traditionally, this is taken by the mother and is believed to impart numerous health benefits.  It is frequently taken shortly after giving birth, during a woman’s menstrual period, or during menopause with the belief it helps counter some of the symptoms of menopause.

Our Promise

We take placenta encapsulation very seriously. Each placenta is evaluated carefully and processed with strict safety standards. We strive to make sure you receive the highest potency preparation by doing everything possible to deliver your capsules within 48 hours, often times before you have even left the hospital. Pick up and delivery is always included so you can focus on your precious baby.

About Me

I am a licensed home birth midwife with a passion for helping moms and babies. I have attended over 200 births since I began my training in 2004. I added placenta encapsulation to my services about 3 years ago when more and more of my clients were seeking information on this little known yet beneficial practice.

Training

In addition to my midwifery training and continuing education regarding placenta physiology and anomalies, I have received additional training from a naturopath and fellow midwife who has encapsulated over 500 placentas over the last 7 years. Since this training I have also completed additional safety coursework and am vigilant about keeping up with the newest research and evidence to support placenta use postpartum.

What Are The Proposed Benefits Of Placenta Encapsulation?

There is little scientific research available regarding placental encapsulation, consumption and its benefits. Tradition and holistic medical customs embrace a number of potential advantages which come from ingesting the placenta.

Among these possible benefits are:

  • Increased release of the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with the infant
  • Increase in CRH, a stress-reducing hormone
  • Decrease in post-partum depression levels
  • Restoration of iron levels in the blood
  • Increase in milk production

The Process

All processing equipment and surfaces are cleaned with a bleach solution before and after each use. The workspace is then covered with disposable absorbent pads and set up so that all items are within arms reach.
Plastic cutting boards and plastic bowls are discarded after each use. All equipment is used exclusively for encapsulation and stored in a separate and dedicated cabinet.

After the prep area has been sanitized to OSHA standards, the placenta is then carefully rinsed and the cord and membranes are removed.
After a thorough inspection, the placenta is weighed, measured, and any anomalies or unique attributes are noted.Photos can be taken at this time if you would like them and we are more than happy to go over the details of our findings with you.

Thin slices are cut and placed on a parchment lined dehydrator tray. This is set to dehydrate for approximately 24 hours at 145-160 degrees (according to USDA safety guidelines for making jerky).
We only work on one placenta at a time, so there is never any chance of cross contamination. Placenta prints and cord keepsakes are created during this phase.

Once drying is complete, the workspace and equipment are again sanitized and covered to begin the final encapsulation process.
The dried strips are ground to a very fine powder in an electric grinder and placed into your choice of capsules using an encapsulation tool. Capsules are then counted and transferred to a jar to be delivered to you.
